Primary malignant bone tumors of the upper limbs

Bone sarcomas located in the upper limbs are rare. For this reason, the orthopedic surgeon should be able to recognize, diagnose and treat them appropriately, seeking to avoid delay or misunderstanding in the approach of these lesions. Its surgical management depends largely on the location, proximity to neurovascular structures, size and extension to the soft tissues. The maintenance of function, especially of the hand, defines limb salvage surgery as the major treatment objective, unless the margins are compromised – adequate surgical planning and excisional margins are the key elements for reducing morbidity and mortality because of treatment or disease. The aim of this paper is to review the clinical, imaging and pathological aspects in the evaluation of bone sarcomas, in addition to specific characteristics related to the most frequent bone sarcomas located in the upper limbs.
